Grand South Grand House Tour Tower Grove Park
Sun Apr 17, 2011

The 17th annual Grand South Grand House and Garden Tour will be held from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday, April 16th and 17th, 2011. The tour will showcase the architectural and personal styles of grand living through five neighborhoods linked by South Grand Boulevard: Compton Heights, Compton Hill Reservoir Square, Shaw, Tower Grove East and Tower Grove Heights. Visitors will have the opportunity to see inside homes and gardens many only admire from the outside. The best-known home in the area -- the Magic Chef Mansion-- is on tour this year. Built in 1908 for Charles Stockstrom, the founder of the Magic Chef Stove company, it is perhaps the grandest of all houses on the South Side. Set on two acres, the elegant 30-room French Renaissance Revival style home may have been modeled after a castle in Germany. Its current owner has been restoring the home to its original glory, honoring both German and French design. This colossal home of over 12,000 square feet is filled with period antiques, many original to the home. Since the home was last on tour the interior renovations have been completed including the newly restored bowling alley in the basement. We also have triplets on tour, or as many call them “sister houses”; three houses with the exact same floor plan adorned with the rich details found in homes built at the turn of the century. Although similar, just like sisters each one has a very distinct sense of style. One home’s decor is all about family and fun with a great 1950’s style rathskeller in the basement. Another home has a very urban contemporary décor with a newly refurbished kitchen featuring all the modern conveniences. The third home has been meticulously restored and decorated in the early 1900’s craftsman style; you will feel like you have just stepped into the pages of a stickley catalogue. All are lovely and beautifully decorated, alike but unique. There will be a total of eleven stops on the tour this year with homes of all sizes, many over 100 years old and interiors that will surprise and amaze you. The Grand South Grand House and Garden Tour starts at the South Grand entrance to Tower Grove Park at Pestalozzi, just across form Messiah Lutheran Church. Free parking is available in the park and free shuttles are available throughout the tour. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 the day of the tour, with discounts rates for groups of ten or more. Advance tickets can be purchased at select locations: Gringo Jones Imports, Botanicals Design Studio, the Missouri Botanical Garden in the Garden Gate Gift Shop, or over the phone by calling 314.773.4844 or by Paypal at our website: http://towergroveeast.org/17th-annual-grand-south-grand-house-and-garden-tour/2379/tower-grove-east-events Anne Moore, Grand South Grand House Tour chairman, welcomes everyone to South Grand. “The Grand South Grand House and Garden Tour has successively grown in recognition as one of the best house and garden tours in St. Louis. With its classic historic housing and strong, vibrant neighborhoods the tour draws visitors into the heart of St. Louis to savor the best of “Grand Living”
